I have recently been asked to talk about what comes after consulting. What are the exit opportunities? While consulting offers exceptional training in problem-solving, stakeholder management, and structured thinking, it’s also well known for being a launchpad to a wide range of careers. Data from alumni of the top consulting firms shows a clear pattern: consultants rarely stay in consulting forever, and most transition into senior roles across corporates, investment firms, and start-ups within three to five years. Where do they go?Broadly, the most common exit routes for consultants fall into five categories:Corporate Strategy & Transformation (30-35%) – The largest share of consultants move into in-house strategy teams. Typical roles include Strategy Manager/Director, Head of Strategy, and Transformation Lead. These positions allow consultants to continue shaping big-picture direction, with deeper ownership of execution and often much better work/life balance. Finance / Private Equity & Venture Capital (25-30%) – Consulting is a recognised feeder into the investment world where there is a similar work/life balance. Many become Associates or Principals in PE/VC firms, or move into Portfolio Operations roles, working closely with management teams to drive value creation. Tech and Scale-Ups (20-25%) – Another popular destination is joining fast-growing technology companies. Consultants often take roles in commercial strategy, growth, or operations, helping businesses scale internationally or professionalise their processes. Start-ups & Entrepreneurship (10-15%) – A smaller but growing group use their consulting experience as a springboard into entrepreneurship, either founding companies or joining early-stage start-ups. I am a perfect example of this. The consulting toolkit of structuring ambiguity and driving results under pressure proves invaluable in this environment. Public Sector/Policy/NGOs (5%) – Some consultants transition to government, policy, or international development organisations, motivated by the chance to create social impact at scale. Advice for Aspiring CandidatesIt is really helpful to know where your career could take you after consulting. However, it comes with a warning. I see many people choosing consulting because it pays well, sounds exciting and enables them to keep their options open. As a result, they struggle to articulate why consulting is a good step for them. How do you know you are a natural fit for consulting and for the company? Why not move directly into corporate strategy or tech start-up role, for example? These are questions that you need to be ready to answer for yourself and potentially during the fit interview. Recruiters want to hire people who are authentic and confident about who they are, what they are good at and why they would be a great hire. This only comes with research and self-reflection.
