Alumni success story: Max Swinckels - Corporate & Investment Banking

The Importance of a Proactive Mindset

The journey from the classroom to a major corporate and investment bank is paved with networking, technical precision, and a strong work ethic. For our Msc in Finance alumnus Max Swinckels, this path led to a new role at Société Générale Corporate and Investment Banking (SGCIB) in Amsterdam.

Recently appointed as a Junior Middle Officer, Max is now responsible for managing a wide range of banking requests for corporate clients. From Cash Management to the sales of credit solutions, his role is at the center of client service and operational efficiency.

The Skills Behind the Role: Problem Solving and Detail

He credits the IUM MSc in Finance program for preparing him for these realities. By learning directly from industry professionals, Max notes that IUM teaches the values and work ethic expected in the finance industry at an early stage. Among the most useful skills he carries into his daily work are:

  • Networking: Building essential connections within the industry.
  • Presenting: Developing the ability to communicate thoughts in a professional, client-facing manner.

Navigating a Competitive Industry

The banking world is currently facing significant challenges, including intense competition and rising costs. However, Max remains optimistic about the path for young professionals.

It still offers great opportunities for young bankers to gain exposure to some of the world’s successful companies and most exciting deals.

Since graduating, Max’s career has already taken unexpected turns, providing him the opportunity to work across different industries and in various countries, a trajectory supported by the global nature of the finance field.

Life at IUM: Connections and Community

Reflecting on his time in Monaco, Max’s favorite memories center on the people he met. Connecting with ambitious, like-minded students in the classroom and during events was a highlight of his experience. Specifically, he mentions the London trip as a pivotal moment that turned professional connections into lifelong friendships.

Now, as a member of the alumni community, Max values the diversity and support of the network. As IUM celebrates its 40th anniversary, he shares his pride in being part of a close community that is always available to assist its members with any query.

Advice for Future Finance Professionals

For students dreaming of entering the finance field, Max offers one definitive piece of advice: Be proactive.

“Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for advice or a coffee chat.”

He recommends IUM to those considering an MSc in Finance because of our industry-led teaching, supportive faculty, and the strength of the active alumni community. For Max, these elements are why IUM is establishing itself as a future leader in finance education.
