Alumni Events

Last Thursday the IUM alumni had a fantastic evening at Fusion on the port in Monaco. Despite the snow storm some alumni managed to come for a relaxing evening. It was great to see you all!

Last Thursday the students had a fantastic evening at La Brasserie on the port in Monaco which celebrated the beginning of term, as well as a thank you to all the captains of the sports teams. They were also joined by alumni from Monaco, who came to catch up with their old classmates as well as the professors and staff who attended.

The captains who were able to enjoy the limelight and receive praise for their efforts were:

- Soccer team: Benoit Bravard
- Golf team: Paulo Ferreira
- Volleyball team: Bruno Bortuzzo
- Sailing team: Massimiliano Stimamiglio
- Ski team: Clement Berruer
- Karting: Lorenzo Tolotta

The following students were also given an award to thank them for their help and contribution to the teams:

- Pascal Bellet for the golf team
- Charles Galbois for the sailing team
- Francesca Mereto for the volleyball team
- Rory O’Connor who is the coach of the soccer team

Finally the three French champions: Lorenzo Tolotta, Julien Picard and Tim Scharf for karting.

Last but not least we gave a big thank you to our sponsor who is also an IUM student: first year BSBA student Petar Despotovic. It was a great event and a wonderful chance for BSBA students, graduate students, alumni, professors and staff to get together.

After weeks of expectation, the IUM Christmas ball 2009 has finally come to pass. The ball, for many, heralded the end of a long and arduous few weeks of work and exams, and offered a very much deserved break from everything. For others, exams are still in full swing, so their presence at the ball was all the more appreciated. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Mathilde and the student association, the evening was a raving success, with a fantastic turnout and brilliantly choreographed talent show, include a special skit put together by IUM staff.

Hype surrounding the event started weeks ago, with girls agonizing over their choice of dress, some even requesting their frocks to be posted all the way from home. The result was a highly glamorous evening with a red-carpet worthy selection of gowns, and suited and booted men, all looking sharp and debonair.

The venue was equally glamorous, with a tastefully decked out dining room in the Fairmont. Thankfully, the previous day’s downpour had stopped, and the sky and sea were both calm and clear, offering a stunning view out over a moonlit Monaco.

The evening began with a pre-dinner cocktail and nibbles, offering a chance to eye up the various dresses and to straighten the last few bowties. At the appointed time, diners were ushered to their places by the highly professional and organized student association, where attentive waiters poured wine liberally.

Following a splendid Christmas themed meal, entertainment was provided in the form of a talent show. Here, students and teachers alike could catch a glimpse of their peers’ secret talents, ranging from acrobatics to actors, from singers to swingers. Guitars were strummed, vocal chords stretched, and rock legends U2 brought to us by the student body.

The elegance and the refinement of the evening kept pace with the level of wine in bottles, slowly being superseded by a slightly more raucous and debauched climate, culminating with limos at midnight to Jimmy’z where the decadence continued.

Here, with the music pounding and the teachers safely distanced, the students let their perfectly coiffed hair down in true IUM style, rocking Jimmy’z until the small hours.

The ball was yet another feather in the student association’s already well-plumed event-organization hat, and Mathilde and her minions can bask in the knowledge that the 2009 IUM Christmas Ball was a Job Well Done.

On November 5, IUM hosted a very special "Business Thursday" dedicated to managing "Luxury Services". Before a diverse audience composed of representatives from leading hotel groups (including Monaco’s SBM and the Hotel Metropole); fashion houses (Faconnable) and even private banks, two leading experts in the field of creating and maintaining service oriented employees presented their findings and recommendations.

While their approaches were different, both advisors—Mr. Jean Harcelin and Mr. Ozzy Monaco—agreed on key points: a luxury brand is only as good as the people representing it. The critical interaction—the ‘moment of truth’—between the luxury brand and its customers is frequently determined by the approach of front line employees and/or sales associates to customers.

Managers in any kind of luxury establishment therefore have to ensure that their employees understand the importance of their role in finding and keeping satisfied and loyal customers. Similarly, both managers and employees need to recognize that occasionally behavior, priorities and incentives have to be modified if each interaction is to be a positive one--from the customer’s perspective.
